Board of Director Vice-President Description

Position: The Vice-President is a one-year volunteer position on the Board of Directors and is elected at the annual meeting by the current Board of Directors. Requirements of a Director apply to each elected position. The Vice-President operates under the direction and control of Board members and reports to the Board and the Wisconsin Affiliate Support Manager. All officers must provide information to the Directors as requested.

Duties:

  1. Assume all of the President's duties in the event of his/her inability or refusal to act and, when so acting, shall have all the powers of, and be subject to all restrictions upon, the President.
  2. Assist the President in the discharge of his/her duties as directed.
  3. Execute for the corporation any contracts, deeds, mortgages, bonds or other instruments which the Board has authorized to be executed except in those instances in which the authority to execute is expressly delegated to another officer or agent.
  4. Oversee the committee chairs, offer support where needed and bring issues to the officers for resolution.
  5. Facilitate the monthly Board meeting and monthly officer's meeting.
  6. Communicate information from Habitat International to the affiliate and act as a liaison.
  7. Develop the annual budget in conjunction with the Executive Director, each committee chair and other officers.
  8. Work with officers to investigate issues and to prepare, propose and implement strategies regarding operations of the affiliate.
  9. Present information on HFHI and HFHO to churches, businesses and individuals requesting speakers.
  10. Deposit funds, transfer funds and sign checks as necessary.
  11. Perform any duties as from time-to-time may be assigned by the Board and President.

Attendance: The Vice-President is expected to attend and participate in the following:
  1. Monthly Board meetings are currently held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Habitat office. The Vice-President must notify the Habitat office by the end of office hours the Monday prior to the meeting if unable to attend.
  2. Monthly officer's meetings are held at a time agreed upon by all officers. The Vice-President must notify the Habitat office by the end of the office hours the day prior to the meeting if unable to attend, and is responsible for supplying necessary information to the Habitat office prior to the meeting.
  3. The annual strategic planning session is typically held on a Saturday in January or February.
  4. The annual meeting is typically held on the third Sunday in September or October.
    The Vice-President is strongly encouraged to attend and participate in the following:
  5. One "Director Build" at the worksite on a Saturday designated by the Board. This is necessary to familiarize each director with a build site for better oversight of organization operations, to serve as publicity for the organization and to act as a team-building event.
  6. Special occasions in representation of Habitat such as groundbreaking ceremonies, house blessings and volunteer appreciation events.
  7. Regional and state-wide training.

Time:
  1. Monthly board meetings are 2-3 hours, depending on the agenda. The anticipated time to perform monthly Vice-President duties is 10 hours per month.
  2. The officer's meeting is typically one hour.
  3. Preparation of the annual budget will be performed during the officer's meetings as appropriate.
  4. A strategic planning session is 6-8 hours in length.
  5. The annual meeting is 1-2 hours, depending on the agenda.
  6. Saturday build days are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with lunch provided.
